Preventing Your Dog Being Overweight: Practical Pet Care Advice

August 4th, 2008

We are all well aware that a considerable proportion of people are not just overweight, but obese. Unfortunately, many pet owners are not just neglecting their own health but that of their dogs. The result is that many dogs are obese too. It really is a form of cruelty to either feed your dog too much or give it food that has a low nutritional value.

So how do you ensure your dog stays at a healthy weight?

Prevention starts with careful monitoring and always paying close attention to the pet’s overall health. From the time that they are puppies to the time that they are older, your dog is counting on you to protect them from bad situations.

Your dog needs regular daily exercise and a well balanced diet. That means food that gives your dog all the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Treats should just be occasional – not form a large part of your dog’s daily intake. If you are unsure what’s right for the breed of dog you have then it’s best to check with your vet.

If your dog is overweight then you need to take action now before the situation gets any worse. This means making their weight loss a goal that requires action every day from you. It has to be something that you prevent from getting worse by monitoring. By preventing them from being overweight it means preventing them from being ill, too.

Prevention does not have to be difficult as most often people can improve their pet’s health through simple maintenance. Yet, being mindful of their tendency to be overweight is important work for every pet owner.
