An Interview With God Screensaver With A Profound Text

May 8th, 2008

If you are at all familiar with the Bible, you may have noticed that the God of the Old Testament is rather different from the God who speaks to Jesus in the New Testament. In a nutshell, the Old Testament God is a cranky fellow who demands blind obedience, while the New Testament God is more like a good parent - loving and forgiving. Indeed, these images of God seem totally different.

In spite of this contradictory record, both God-images seem to coexist in the Christian world. And they are evoked according to the need of the moment. If you feel like giving people a hard time, then bring up the Old Testament God; otherwise use the New Testament version.

Personally, I have never really believed in the Christian God - I have been more attracted to the spiritual concepts found in Buddhism. However, living in a part of the world where Christian beliefs are so prevalent, it is hard to ignore them completely.

So when one day I happened to read a book called “Conversations With God”, I was really fascinated. The book portrays a God who is very different from the confusing and even rather negative God found in the Bible. This God is a very kind and forgiving being, yes - but also so much more. S/he provides clear, logical, and empowering answers to all those deep questions that many of us keep brooding over.

I became so enthused about the book that I distilled some of the juciest tidbits into a short dialogue, which I turned into a screensaver. It is an Interview With God Screensaver, and this interview with God might take place in a dream or dream-like state.

The book itself, which I like so much, is also a type of Interview With God; since God speaks to the author through automatic writing. You may argue that the human author made it all up himself, but either way it is a very profound text.
