Parenting Help Setting An Example

March 30th, 2008

Children learn to mirror others from a very young age. It’s how they find out how to behave, look after for themselves, cultivate new skills, and communicate with others. From their earliest moments they study you closely and pattern their own ways and convictions after yours. Your examples become abiding representations, which will set their frame of mind and actions for the remainder of their life.

It’s key to be conscientious, consistent and affectionate with your son or daughter. This also holds true for the relationship you have with your spouse, your parents, and other family members and friends that are also a part of your child’s life. Own up to mishaps when you make them, and talk openly and ethically with all friends and family.

It’s also key to look after yourself. When we’re giving your attention to what’s best for our son or daughter it’s so easy to pass over our own needs. Your son or daughter and your family are relying on you emotionally and physically, so it’s important that you teach your son or daughter by example that taking care of yourself aids you to take care of them and the rest of your family. This displays to your son or daughter that not only do you care deeply for them and all the family, but you care deeply for yourself as well. This is a vital point in teaching your child about self esteem. This may entail hiring a sitter and treating yourself to say a movie and dinner out, or participating in another favorite activity on your own. This shows your son or daughter that you are not simply their parent, but a your own person with your interests and needs. It also gives them scope to show you how well they can do when you are not there for a short time.

It’s also essential to sustain your relationship with your spouse. Let your son or daughter see you communicate in a positive and healthy way with one another, and demonstrate affection and love for one another so your son or daughter may start to appreciate from an early age what a healthy marriage should be like.

You’ll soon see your son or daughter modelling many of their actions after your own. So be ceratin that what you say and do around your son or daughter will help create a strong sense of security and self confidence.
