Varicose Vein Treatment Recovery

May 30th, 2008

Spider veins on their legs or hands disturb many women. These happen with age or they may be hereditary. Sometimes standing or sitting for a long time and having a sedentary job can give rise to these problems. These veins may even hurt or irritate the person.

Normal exercises like walking, or keeping the legs lifted while in bed may cure them. But in most cases Sclerotherapy is the only answer. In this procedure the doctor injects a liquid in the veins, which cause them to shrink and fade away. The procedure s simple and can be done in a doctor’s room. It takes barely half an hour to one hour for the procedure. The injections are done using fine needles, which hardly cause any pain. The liquid injected may cause irritation or burning sensation but it is a bearable one.

The patient can go back to work as long as she does not over exert, squat or run. She has to take care for a couple of weeks and then the results are evident. She will have healthier looking clean legs and she can wear whatever dresses she wants without worrying about varicose veins or spider veins. In most cases one or two treatments are enough for the existing varicose to fade away. In some cases, however, multiple treatments may be needed.

There is no hard and fast rule as to how many times a patient needs to be treated with sclerotherapy. It depends on the problem, the doctor and the patient. The recovery period is just a few days after sclerotherapy and there are not many significant side effects. This procedure can be repeated after a suitable gap, maybe of a few weeks, before the next session begins. If there are many varicose veins to be treated, then many sessions may be needed. But if the veins which need to be treated are few, then a couple of sessions are adequate. There is no harm if sclerotherapy is performed many times as long as the veins are different.

Too many injections in the same vein may not be advisable but if different veins are to be treated, then sclerotherapy can be done as often as needed. Even though this is a permanent solution for varicose or spider veins, there is no guarantee that other veins may not be affected. Sclerotherapy is a corrective procedure, not a preventive one. Hence fresh veins cannot be stopped from appearing and the therapy may be needed more often. Also all of those treatments add up.
