Arthritis Information

Arthritis is a disease that brings on stiffness and pain with swelling and it affects the muscles and the bones, especially the joints where it causes the most damage. The bones are protected in the joints by tissue called cartilage which acts as a buffer between the ends. They are like the glands in our body and the cells they are made of are called chondrocytes. All chondrocytes will die and are usually replaced by new cartilage cells.

However, over an extended period of time, the inflammation can kill more of the cartilage cells than the body is able to replace. This is especially true if there has been an injury or there is not enough proper nutrients in the body to repair the joint. Arthritis makes the joints to become weak and instable. The joints become deformed that causes hindrance in the day to day tasks. Generally, arthritis can be treated with physical therapy, medication, and changes to the lifestyle the individual is used to living. If an arthritis patient does not get any relief from medication and other forms of therapies then the last option they can resort to is joint replacement.

Arthritis Symptoms

Arthritis can be grouped into two main categories based upon the ‘localized’ or ‘generalized’ areas of the body or joints that are affected and then into sub-categories. Localized Conditions: This affects the soft tissue surrounding the joints or bones is refers to conditions such as bursitis or tendonitis. It could just be that the localized conditions could manifest themselves in just one of two joints being affected. A generalized condition is a condition where the muscles and the soft tissues get damaged, in this condition there is no swelling or any kind of inflammation on the joints. In this condition there is no evident kind of damage caused to the joints and is known as Fibromyalgia. This kind of arthritis is widespread among people.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an example of a condition under this category, as well as gout, and psoriatic arthritis. Under this category, rheumatoid arthritis would be an example of a condition you would see, along with psoriatic arthritis and gout. Erythematosus or involvement of skin, kidney and other organs, vasculitis or any organ and polymyositis involving the muscles are other generalized conditions.

Arthritis Diet

46 million adults and 300,000 children are approximately affected in the United States with one or more of the 100 different medical arthritic conditions. This condition can start as early as infancy, while it is most common among adults over 60, primarily in the form of osteoarthritis. The numbers are increasing as the American population ages and more and more people are beginning to suffer from arthritis.

Arthritis and related illnesses are the cause of major disability in the U.S. and costs over 124 billion dollars a year in medical care and indirect expenses. Maintaining the right weight, eating fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and D are simple but effective measures to prevent and arrest osteoporosis, Also by making sure they are getting enough calcium (adults: 1000-1500mg per day), regular exercise and to avoid injuries brought about by sports activities.
