The Truth Behind Tonsillectomy

May 15th, 2008

Basically tonsillectomy refers to the process of removing the tonsils surgically. Tonsils are actually masses of lymphatic tissue which can be found in the back of the throat. Generally, they are only removed when the patient has inflammation or infection in the tonsils.

Tonsillectomy is pretty common and is one of the common operations performed on children in the States. Newer and better techniques such as laser and electro-surgery are being introduced to improve the technique of tonsil surgery. This has helped to decrease pain and discomfort to the patients.

Common side effect includes having bad breath after tonsillectomy. Doctors have usually attribute this to the healing process at the back of the throat. Caused by the fluid which comes out of the infected lymphatic tissue, this fluid can coat the teeth and inner mouth with fluid that cause bad breath.
