Research At The University Of Hull, England Demonstrate That Modern Antidepressants Have Very Little Clinical Benefit.
The studies at the University of Hull showed that modern prescription antidepressants have very little effect on people with depression when compared with placebos. Professor Irving Kirsch is reported as saying “ There seems little reason to prescribe anti-depressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients” after reviewing the data from 47 different clinical trials.
He concluded that “The difference in improvement between patients taking placebos and patients taking anti-depressants is not very great”and ‘This means that depressed people can improve without chemical treatments.’
There has been substantial research on the treatment of depression with natural and alternative approaches. A major study of depression at the University of Texas found that people suffering from the condition had a diet that contained below the RDA of one or more important nutrients. Another study at the School of Behavioural Sciences, James Cook University of North Queensland, Townsville, Australia concluded that both meditation and exercise increased the levels of beta-endorphins and corticotropin-releasing hormone, both of which are associated with positive states of mood.
At the Wayne County General Hospital in Michigan, USA, acupuncture treatment was given to 85 patients all suffering from psychological disorders (including depression). Acupuncture proved to produce positive results in over 78% of the patients. The researchers concluded that there is little doubt that acupuncture is a prime therapy to consider in helping overcome depression.
