Blood Diamonds From Africa
Most blood diamonds come from Africa. They are mined in war zones and sold in order to finance insurgencies, invading armies, and warlords. Essentially blood diamonds, also called conflict diamonds, converted diamonds, hot diamonds, and war diamonds, fuel a form of slavery, which is indirectly fueled by western demands for loose diamonds. Some actions have been taken by the UN against blood diamonds, such as the 1998 sanction forbidding countries from buying diamonds from Angola. The US declared illegal the importation of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone and Liberia. Many films have been made about blood diamonds, such as the recent film staring Leonardo DiCaprio entitled Blood Diamond.
